Okay, you might be thinking why the jungle? why not just flowers from the garden or park, or the textures of the beach, (that’s not a bad idea – maybe next time). This isn’t the first time I’ve used tropical plants as inspiration for a project, I did tropical leaves for my last module in the second year too, however it didn’t really pan out how I’d expected, it was all quite flat looking and very digital, I’m not saying digital is bad it just wasn’t what I was going for. (I was disappointed with my final outcomes).
During the summer I worked on my drawing skills and techniques and developed my computer skills too. When we were given our brief for the first part of our third year project we were given the freedom of choosing any theme we desired, I stuck with tropicals. (I am determined to produce work I am proud of).
However that isn’t the only reason I chose ‘the jungle’. I have visited the Eden Project a few times now and I just love being in the Rainforest Biome. It is a place I can spend time in and not think about anything outside of the Biome, unconscious to the fact that I forget everything as soon as I walk in. I just find myself gazing up at the ginormous leaves and searching for textures that many eyes overlook.
It’s a form of escapism for me. As someone who has lived with a mental illness for as long I can remember, being surrounded by wildlife or in this case just plants allows me to forget who I am and everything else real life can bring and just focus on the plants and how extraordinary our natural world is.
The rainforest is an amazing beautiful place its just a huge shame that it is being destroyed, embarrassingly by us humans. I’d like to make sure my designs for this project not only look good but brings awareness to the awful things we are doing to our planet. Therefore I have gradually bought other aspects into my project such as birds and animals, I’m thinking about bringing in insects as well.
